In 1940 the headlines were telling of Germany's invasion of France, Italy's declaration of war on Britain and France, and Winston Churchill becoming Britain's newest prime minister. That same year Ford rolled out its latest version of the Deluxe Convertible. The original Deluxe was put into production in 1937.
Ford implemented aspects of the Lincoln Zephyr into the 1940 Deluxe, like a V-shaped grill and vertical bars, fender-mounted sealed beam headlights (which was new for most 1940 car models) and four-wheel hydraulic brakes.
The car was powered by a 221 cubic-inch V-8 engine packing a walloping 85 horses, which were controlled by a three-speed manual transmission. Covering the engine is a flat-topped hood.
Only 23,704 convertibles were ever produced. The top was motor-controlled, thus eliminating the need to get out of the car to put the top up.
A nice set of white-walls finished the look of the 1940 Ford Deluxe Convertible, which is the most sought after of all 1940s cars.
