Sculptor and car enthusiast Dave McGary has unveiled A Recipe for Speed, a tribute to the history of speed racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Showing salt heavy on the tires and spray across the door numbers, the bronze captures the driver of a 1932 Ford leaning on this roadster awaiting the time slip after his run across the famous measured mile.
Collectors of automotive art will explore the details of the unique 1/6th scale speedster and the impressions in the salt of tire treads and boot tracks. McGary secured Italian Carrara marble for the base that he carved to capture the glistening sediment of the salt flats that make Bonneville the fastest place on earth. The open engine compartment reveals the technology of the day's pursuit of speed.
The bronze is the first sharing the artist's personal interest in car building. McGary was introduced to the history of speed racing on the salt flats in the shop of Ardun engine builder Don Ferguson Jr who has helped generations of racers join him in membership in the Bonneville 200 MPH Club. McGary has not yet taken his shot at the long black line at Bonneville.
Cast in forty-six (46) separate pieces and weighing over 150 pounds the bronze with patina and paint is a limited edition of forty (40) masterworks and is currently on display at Expressions in Bronze Gallery on Main Street in Scottsdale.
